Shimon Gatt Awards Info

The Sphingolipid Club is proud to announce the call for two “SHIMON GATT AWARDS” for graduate students who have just published a paper, reporting a research study on the topic “Enzymes of Sphingolipid Metabolism”.

The call is in memory of Shimon Gatt, who died last Oct. 11, 2017. Prof. Shimon Gatt was a great person and a pioneer scientist in the field of Sphingolipid metabolism, and the Sphingolipid Club has decided to honour his great contribution with these Awards. A short biography of Shimon Gatt is attached to this announcement.

The Awards account for two 1000 € grants: one made available by SLC and the other by our colleague Myles Cabot, who was a PhD Student of Shimon in the yrs 1972-76. They will be offered to the best paper published in the period Feb 28, 2017 – Feb 28, 2018. Moreover, the winner will have free Registration fee at the next Sphingolipid Club Meeting, provided he/she presents an oral talk.

The applicants should fulfill the following criteria:

  • To be the first or co-first author of a paper published in a peer-reviewed journal focused on the topic “Enzymes of Sphingolipid Metabolism”.
  • To be enrolled in a PhD program at the date of acceptance of the paper.
  • To be a promise for future substantial achievement in research as judged by the PhD supervisor.
  • To be a 2018 Member of the Sphingolipid Club. Membership for 2018 can be obtained by subscription at the Sphingolipid Club website ( upon the payment of a 50 € fee, before Feb 28, 2018.

Selection of the winners will be done by Members of the Sphingolipid Club Scientific Board and will be notified by April 30, 2018. Each Member will individually evaluate the fulfillment of the application criteria, and rank the applications using a standardized format that will weigh in the different indicators, including international ranking of the Journal, coherency to the Award topic and scientific quality of the paper. Each Member will submit the results to the Sphingolipid Club President, Prof. Riccardo Ghidoni, who will post the names of the Award recipients on the Sphingolipid Club website. Should the supervisor of the candidate be a Member of the Scientific Board of the Sphingolipid Club, this Member will not take part of the selection committee.
