ABOUT

The XVI Sphingolipid Club Meeting was held in Supetar, island of Brač, Croatia, from Sept 22 to 26, 2026, proficiently organized and chaired by Dragana Fabris, Ivana Karmelić and Mia Jurilj Sajko, from the University of Zagreb School of Medicine.

The Meeting provided to young PhD students and post-docs trainees the opportunity to share their research with more senior experienced scientists and pioneers in the Sphingolipid field, in a friendly atmosphere with top-level science.

104 researchers from 20 different countries, from Europe, Asia, North and South America, participated in the event, which hosted 86 presentations and posters. Among them was the eminent keynote lecture by Yusuf Hannun (Stony Brook, USA). All sessions were passionately attended and the discussions were intense and fruitful.

A special session supported by the ESN – European Society for Neurochemistry, titled Sphingolipid Signalling and Metabolism in the Nervous System, was a remarkable and successful part of the program.

A primary mission of the Sphingolipid Club is to promote the career of PhD students and early postdocs working in the Sphingolipid field.  To this end, some young trainees presenting their results as a talk or as a poster were awarded thanks to the generous contribution of some of our sponsors. The recipients of such awards have been: Linda Montavoci (Oxford, UK); Adriana Lipovčić (Zagreb, Croatia); Matteo Prisinzano (Florence, Italy); Michelle Koster (Maastricht, the Netherlands); Nassri Abdoush (Erlangen, Germany); Camillo Morano (Milan, Italy); Henrik Nurmi (Turku, Finland); Francesca Lozzi (Rome, Italy); Elodie Lassallette (Toulouse, France); Veronika Ondrejčeková (Hradec Králové, Czechia).

The social events consisted of a guided excursion across the island, offering a taste of Brač’s history, stone-working tradition, olive oil and winemaking heritage. The island excursion, the dinner at a traditional Dalmatian tavern and the Gala Dinner, in a cozy and typical restaurant, were the occasion to widen personal contacts and favour reciprocal knowledge.

This Meeting celebrated the 24th anniversary of our Club, and laid the foundations for further activities, aiming to enlarge our association, and increase the interest of the scientific community in the fascinating field of Sphingolipids.

After the success of the XVI Sphingolipid Club Meeting, we are inspired to work for the organization of the 2028 Sphingolipid Club Meeting!
