ABOUT
The XV Sphingolipid Club Meeting has been held in Erlangen, Germany, from Sept 3 to 7, 2024, proficiently organized and chaired by Christian Müller, Liubov Kalinichenko and Johannes Kornhuber, from the University of Erlangen.
The Meeting provided to young PhD students and post-docs trainees the opportunity to share their researches with more senior experienced scientists and pioneers in the Sphingolipid field, in a friendly atmosphere and a top-level science.
About 110 researchers of 20 different countries, from Europe, near and far Asia, North, Central and South America, participated at the event, which hosted more than 90 presentations and posters. Among them the eminent keynote lectures by Thierry Levade, University of Toulouse, France, and Jae-sung Bae, Kyungpook National University, Daegu, South Korea. All the sessions have been passionately participated and the discussions intense and fruitful.
A symposium, supported by the International Society of Neurochemistry and titled “Brain sphingolipids driving psychiatric and neurological disorders: mechanisms and therapeutic targets”, was a remarkable and successfull part of the program.
A primary mission of the Sphingolipid Club is to promote the career of PhD students and early postdocs working in the Sphingolipid field. To this, all young trainees presenting their results as a talk or as a poster have been supported with travel grants. Moreover, thanks to the generous contribution of some of our sponsors, we have been able to offer three 500 € best oral talk awards, to Linda Montavoci, University of Milan, Italy, to Angel Gaudioso, Centro Biologia Molecular Severo Ochoa, Madrid, Spain, and to Susana Mesén-Porras, University of Costa Rica, San José, Costa Rica, and one 300 € best poster award to Shruti Naik, University Hospital Heidelberg, Heidelberg, Germany.
The social events consisted of the visit to Bamberg, a historic town in Bavaria, with a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a rich cultural historical center. The visit to Bamberg and the Gala Dinner, in a cozy and typical restaurant, were the occasion to widen personal contacts and favour reciprocal knowledge.
This Meeting celebrated the 22th anniversary of our Club, and layed the foundations for further activities, aiming to enlarge our association, and improve the interest of the scientific community in the fascinating issue of Sphingolipids.
After the success of the XV Sphingolipid Club Meeting, we are since now encouraged to work for the organization of the 2026 Sphingolipid Club Meeting !
